Is the Timing of Toddlers’ Sleep Linked to Their Body Composition?

This study looked at whether the length, timing, and quality of toddlers’ nighttime sleep is linked to their body composition.

What We Did and Why We Did It

Researchers studied 48 toddlers aged 1 to under 3 years in the Guelph Family Health Study. Each child wore a small movement tracker for seven days to measure their nighttime sleep, including:

  • How long they slept
  • When they fell asleep and woke up
  • How often they woke during the night

Researchers then compared this with measurements of the children’s body composition, including body fat and waist size. Good sleep has been linked to healthier body weight in older children and adults, but less is known about toddlers, so researchers used accurate trackers to look at several aspects of sleep at once.

The timing of sleep mattered most:

  • Toddlers who fell asleep later tended to have a higher waist-to-height ratio.
  • Toddlers who woke up later tended to have a lower body mass index.
  • How long children slept and how often they woke during the night were not linked to body composition.

This suggests that when toddlers sleep may be just as important as how long they sleep. Building healthy, consistent sleep routines early in life may help support healthy growth and could play a role in preventing childhood obesity.

Limitations

This was a small study and a snapshot taken at one point in time, so it cannot show cause and effect. Larger and longer studies are needed to confirm the findings.
